El Paso needs Asarco
As per the Executive Director from the TCEQ, a favorable recommendation was issued on May 1, 2007 for the restarting of Asarco. Yet, our city leaders and several groups continue to put out misleading information and use scare tactics to garner support against Asarco. Why? Because it is not about the environment, it is about the land. This is why our city government brought in national developers, met with them in secret and refused to provide various requested documents which including billing information on two outside law firms hired to represent the city. Thanks to the Texas Attorney General issuing a ruling through the Public Information Act, chapter 552 of the Government Code, the requested information had to be provided. Keep in mind that this dates back to March of 2006. It is shameful, that these elected officials seem to think that it is okay to waste almost one million dollars for litigation, allocate an additional $50 thousand dollars to hire an ad agency and anywhere from $300 to $400 thousand dollars to run ads against Asarco. El Paso needs employment opportunities with above average salaries, benefits and union representation . . .El Paso needs Asarco Again, this is not about the environment, this is about the land, Asarco's Land.

Irene, Did you know that the reason you taste LEAD (pb) in the air when ASARCO is running? The primary ingredient used to process ore is sulfuric acid......Or H2SO4. When you are tasting sulfer, you are breathing sulfer. The inside of your lungs contains a wet environment for that sulfer to react with the water in your lungs and turn to a mild acid. 2 Universities, 5 schools, 3 Hospitals are all underneath ASARCO. New industry would never consider moving their business and investing in a town that is considered to have dirty air or a pollution problem. For the sake of El Paso and its future groth.....you need to change your mind.

You must not have children. How can anyone in their right mind think that haveing a smelter spue out nasty "emmisions" directly above 5 schools, 2 Universities and 2 hospitals be good. How can this possibley be good for El Paso. We dont need those wages and that land needs to be cleaned up. If not toxins could polute the entire length of the Rio Grand down to the Gulf. El PAso cant afford that liability. I went to one of the downtown schools in El Paso as well, now my kids go there. If ASARCO wants to stay great, but move it out toward Columbus, NM and away from people making a clean and beneficial impact on our town.
